ahhh I was totally wondering if you liked that Motion City Soundtrack song, I wanted to mention it to you cuz I thought you'd like it/may have used to. I'm so excited about this song again all of a sudden! I've been pretty nostalgic lately about the emo movement or whatever, like 2004-2006. It was silly sometimes but also there was a lot of good music.

Yeah, it was a pretty good song. I’ve been thinking a lot about “emo” music and what it means lately as well. I think the demonization of the word/genre is related to the possible fact that the 2000s were even more uncomfortably macho than the nineties were. I mean, the same people who dismissed MCR as overly sensitive “fags” were probably the same people who wished they looked like Justin Timberlake with his perfectly coiffed hair and matching gold hoop earrings just half a decade earlier (although neither sentiment was likely sincere).

The whole emo genre is entwined with the idea that feelings are valuable even when they’re negative, and hell, that could be one of the most important notions of the (repressed, scared, reactively conservative) century (millennium?). I think it’s that important. And of course, it’s not like Gerard Way and Jesse Lacey invented emotional honesty, but it’s remarkable that they professed it without fear to a hundred million depressed, disillusioned teenagers who were being told by their self-entitled Boomer parents to suck it up and act presentable. I want to write an essay about this, but just like every other topic I’m passionate about, I lack the historical and contextual knowledge that makes, say, a good Pitchfork or Ebert review (or really any good pop culture article) worth reading and I often lack the spoons to accomplish meaningful research. Whatever. Maybe I’ll try anyway.

Oh, and you reblogged “Guns of Brixton” just now. I’d never heard the original, but I know of the song because Jimmy Cliff just did a good reggae cover of it. I thought that was cool, being that he was one of The Clash’s influences and his film The Harder They Come (which helped bring Reggae to the American mainstream) is mentioned in the lyrics.
